UMass’ Jonathan Quick Captures Stanley Cup For Third Time In His Career
June 13, 2023 | Hockey
LAS VEGAS – Former University of Massachusetts hockey goaltender Jonathan Quick (2005-07) has captured the Stanley Cup for the third time in his career as the Vegas Golden Knights secured a series-clinching 9-3 win over the Florida Panthers in Game 5 on Tuesday night.
It marks the sixth time a Massachusetts hockey alumnus has won the Stanley Cup and second consecutive year after Cale Makar (2017-19) hoisted the Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022. Quick was previously a Stanley Cup Champion in 2012 and 2014 with the Los Angeles Kings, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2012. Conor Sheary (2010-14) won two Stanley Cups during his time with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017.
Quick was traded to Vegas from the Columbus Blue Jackets one day following a deal that sent him to Columbus from Los Angeles this past March. He appeared in 10 regular season games with the Knights, starting nine, and logged a record of 5-2 with a 3.13 goals against average and a .901 save percentage over 536 minutes of action with one shutout. He did not see postseason action.
Quick became the 30th NHL goalie and fourth born in the United States to play 700 games in March 2022. The Hamden, Connecticut native took sole possession of second place on the NHL all-time wins list among United States-born goalies with 31 saves in a 4-3 victory against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on March 21, 2023. It was his 375th win, moving past John Vanbiesbrouck (374).
At UMass, Quick led the Minutemen to their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2006-07 while posting team single-season records with 19 wins, 37 appearances, 1,046 saves and 2,224 minutes played. He finished his sophomore season with a 19-12-5 record, three shutouts, a 2.16 GAA (tied for 11th in the nation) and a .929 save percentage (fifth in the nation). That season, he became UMass' fifth All-American selection earning second-team honors. He still holds program career record for saves per-game (28.96) and ranks second all-time in career save percentage (.926) and third in career goals against average (2.40).
