Women’s Lacrosse Opens 2023 Season Tomorrow Against UMass Lowell

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team begins its 2023 regular season campaign tomorrow on Garber Field against UMass Lowell. The Minutewomen and River Hawks open the new season at 3 p.m.
Preseason All-Atlantic 10
Three Minutewomen were named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference team in Hannah Heller, Amy Moreau, and Audra Tosone. Heller earned second-team all-conference honors as a defender a season ago and secured 29 draw controls, forced 23 turnovers, and picked up 32 ground balls. Moreau and Tosone were also named preseason all-league a season ago. Moreau recorded 22 points on 16 goals and six assists while causing a team-best 26 turnovers. Tosone forced 17 turnovers and picked up 23 ground balls to go along with 25 draw controls as a junior.
The 2022 Season
UMass earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament last season and won the Atlantic 10 regular season title with a perfect 9-0 mark in league play. The NCAA appeareance marked the 14th all-time for the Minutewomen and the second straight.
New Era Of Massachusetts Lacrosse
Jana Drummond was named the 10th head coach in program history on June 3 as she was elevated from assistant coach to head coach. Drummond spent five seasons as an assistant coach at UMass and helped the team to an 81-21 record with five A-10 regular season titles, two A-10 tournament championships, and three NCAA tournament berths. Drummond also spent time as an assistant coach at Marist after wrapping up her playing career at Oregon, where she was a three-time all-conference selection and finished as the program's all-time leading scorer with 146 goals.
ILWomen/IWLCA Division I Poll
The Minutewomen are ranked 23rd in the initial ILWomen/IWLCA Division I poll as announced in late January. UMass is one of two Atlantic 10 teams in the top-25 with Richmond coming in at no. 22.

Top Of The League
UMass finished last season as the A-10 leader in goals per game at 15.95 and led the conference in shots on goal per game at 26.25. The Minutewomen ranked second in multiple categories among league leaders, including points per game (22.95) and shots per game (33.55). Defensively, UMass led the A-10 in caused turnovers per game at 11.5 and led the league in draw controls per game at 15.75.
Looking Ahead
The Minutewomen follow Saturday's season opener with a Wednesday afternoon matchup at 2022 NCAA runner-up and No. 3-ranked Boston College. UMass returns to Garber Field on Wednesday, Feb. 22 for a 2 p.m. matchup against Siena to begin back-to-back games at home.
