Will Kenney's time of 14:06.13 broke Wayne Levy's record from 1987

BOSTON, Mass.-  A handful of Minutemen and Minutewomen traveled to Boston to compete in the Boston University Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Saturday to start their indoor season.

Will Kenney was the highlight for the men's team as the junior set a personal record and a school record in the 5000m with a time of 14:06.13. The previous school record was held by Wayne Levy (14:21.6) and has stood since 1987.

Since 1991, no UMass athlete has run the indoor 5000m in under 14:30 until Saturday. Along with Kenney, Michael Norberg and Bobby Carew achieved this feat as they finished with times of 14:27.09 and 14:27.78, respectively. Norberg's performance placed him fifth all-time in program history in the indoor 5000m, while Carew followed behind in sixth. All three of the times were personal bests as well.

Sophomore Liam Ouellette, also competed for the Minutemen, finishing 27th in the unseeded 5000m with a time of 14:34.88.

A pair of Minutewomen also made the trip to Boston, as Rebecca Hartman and Eugenia Fairhust both competed in the 5000m. Hartman finished with a personal best time of 17:09.71 which placed her fifth all-time at UMass in the indoor 5000m, while Fairhurst completed the race with a time of 17:32.92.

The Minutemen and Minutewomen will officially kick off their season on Thursday and Friday as they head to Storrs, Conn. for the UConn Tri-Meet.
