November 21, 2023 | Men's Soccer
The All-District honorees will also be considered for Academic All-America.
Six members of the men's soccer team were named to the 2023 College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team as announced on Tuesday afternoon. Nick Zielonka, Jack Englebert, Matt Zambetti, Aidan Kelly, Alex Brown, and Brad Moccio were named to the team after maintaining at least 3.5 GPA and starting in 60% of games.
After being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic team for the second time earlier this month, Nick Zielonka adds another academic award to his resume. The sports management major played a key part in the Minuteman offense as he led not only the team, but all of the Atlantic 10 in assists with ten in the regular season. His six goals were also good for second on the team. Zielonka was also named Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week once this season as well. In our quarterfinal game against #2 Saint Louis (11/3), Zielonka scored the game-tying goal in the 75th minute to push the game to OT and netted a penalty kick to help UMass advance to the semifinals.Â
Goalkeeper Matt Zambetti earned the honor for the first time as a graduate student. Zambetti, a transfer from Virginia Tech, has spent the past two seasons at UMass where he has started 34 games. This season, Zambetti has made 17 starts while holding a 1.39 goals against average and making 56 saves.
Captain Jack Englebert made the Academic All-District Team for the first time in his career. Englebert made 12 starts and appeared in 17 while logging 1,072 minutes on the season. The senior midfielder recorded one assist on the season, assisting a 14th minute goal in a 3-2 win over Providence (9/9) for his second career point.Â
Three members of the UMass starting back line were named to the Academic All-District team as Aidan Kelly, Alex Brown and Brad Moccio all received the honors. The three defensemen all started in 18 out of the 19 games played this year, combining for 4,767 minutes on the pitch. The trio helped UMass earn three clean sheet victories. Junior Brad Moccio recorded his second career goal in a 3-0 win over Yale (9/4) while sophomore Aidan Kelly scored his first career goal in a 3-2 win over Providence (9/9). Kelly would go on to be named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference second team.
Academic All-District honorees are considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First, second and third team Academic All-America teams will be announced in early December.
