October 27, 2023 | Women's Soccer

Minutewomen finish postseason action with Dukes 2-1 win.

AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 4-seeded University of Massachusetts women's soccer team dropped a close 2-1 match to the No. 5-seed Duquesne in the Atlantic 10 Championship Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Minutewomen concluded the season with a 9-5-4 overall record.

Duquesne struck first in the 13th minute, Maya Matesa took a shot from deep right that found its way into the top left side of the net. At the 29:09 mark, senior forward Lauren Robles knotted the game up at 1-1 after knocking in her third goal of the season. Senior midfielder Ella Curry passed the ball into open space, allowing sophomore forward Nia Hislop to chase it down and work around a Duquesne defender. Hislop passed the ball up to Robles, before Robles booted the ball from 10 yards out into the lower right corner of the goal.

The Dukes took back a goal 30 seconds later, as Matesa found the back of the net from deep for the second time on the afternoon with an assist from Mackenzie Muir to regain the lead at 2-1. The Minutewomen had several scoring opportunities throughout the remainder of the contest, but Duquesne was able to hold on to its lead, bringing the game to its final score of 2-1.

Massachusetts outshot Duquesne, 18-7, including eight goals on net to the Dukes six. UMass also had the advantage in corner kicks with five, while Duquesne took two.

Junior forward Ashley Lamond led the team with four shots, including a team-high three on target. Junior midfielder Emma Pedolzky and Robles followed close behind with three shots apiece, as Robles placed two on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Bella Mendoza played the full 90 minutes in net, allowing two goals and turning aside four. Maddy Neundorfer saw 90 minutes of action for the Dukes, allowing one goal and making seven saves on the day.
