UMass places the highest number of programs in top-10 percent of their respective sports since 2018-19.

AMHERST, Mass. – Thirteen University of Massachusetts athletic programs were recognized with NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Awards, as announced by the organization on Tuesday afternoon.

UMass baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, field hockey, men's lacrosse, softball, men's soccer, men's swimming and diving, tennis, men's track and field, and women's track and field all scored in the top-10 percent of their sports nationally. It marked the highest number of programs since 2018-19, when 13 programs earned a perfect single-year APR score of 1,000.

The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term, and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance. APRs for programs in the top-10 percent ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000.

"Our student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom and in competition, which is a point of pride for our university," said Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford. "Our coaches have recruited students who desire to be successful in every aspect of their collegiate experience. In addition, we are grateful for the tremendous support our student-athletes receive from our coaches and the academic success staff relative to their academic pursuits. The proven success of our teams is proof that you can win championships and earn a meaningful degree at one of the best public research institutions in the world."

Women's cross country has collected the honor for the ninth straight year and 11th time overall, while tennis tabbed the accolade for the third consecutive year. Football tallied a multi-year rate of 951, earning above 950 for the first time in the FBS era.

The most recent multi-year APR rates are based on scores from the 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years.
