Massachusetts Tennis Readies For Weekend Of A-10 Play In South Carolina

The Minutewomen face Dayton on Friday, March 18, at 1 p.m., before taking on Davidson on Saturday, March 19, at 11 a.m.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts tennis team travels to Charleston, South Carolina, to open Atlantic 10 competition with a two-match weekend on Friday, March 18, and Saturday, March 19. UMass will match up against Dayton on Friday at the Charleston Tennis Center at 1 p.m., before going head-to-head with Davidson on Saturday at 11 a.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Massachusetts picked up its seventh win of the season, defeating Bryant, 4-1, on the road last Saturday night.

The Minutewomen took the doubles point from the Bulldogs after victories on courts No. 1 and No. 2. Renata Farima and Vitoria Okuyama downed Ada Boru and Leanne Kendall of Bryant, 6-2 at No. 1, before Bryant had a triumph at No. 3. Duo Thamonpan Jonglertrakul and Mariya Krasakova defeated Bryant's Camila Baeza and Manuela Gomez Estrada, 7-6 (7-2) at court No. 2, to secure the point.

During singles competition, Bryant notched the first point due to a retirement from Polina Akimova at No. 3. Jonglertrakul earned a point for the Minutewomen, taking down Caitlyn Munson of Bryant, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, before Farima extended UMass' lead with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 1 over Bryant's Boru. Danielle Hack clinched the match for Massachusetts, taking down Sarah Hickey of Bryant, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2.

SCOUTING DAYTON
The Flyers enter Friday's match with an overall record of 7-6 and will play their first A-10 match of the season. Dayton is coming off a 5-2 triumph over Saint Francis from Sunday, March 6.

UMass and Dayton will meet for the fifth time since the 2008-09 season with the Minutewomen holding a 4-0 record in the series. The programs met first in that frame on April 17, 2009 at a neutral site in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, during the A-10 Championships First Round. Massachusetts went on to win 5-0. The last meeting between the two teams was on April 24, 2014 at a neutral site in Mason, Ohio, where the Minutewomen took down the Flyers, 4-0.

SCOUTING DAVIDSON
The Wildcats head into Saturday's match up boasting an 8-2 overall record, including a 1-0 A-10 Conference mark. Davidson will compete prior to the match up on Saturday on Thursday, March 17, at College of Charleston. Â

UMass and Davidson will meet for the fifth time since the 2014-15 season, with the Minutewomen holding the 3-1 record. The two teams met on March 20, 2015 with Massachusetts coming away with a 4-3 victory on the day. The last meeting was in Amherst, as UMass won 5-2 over Davidson.

FOUR AND COUNTING
Farima has garnered the A-10 Rookie of the Week accolade four times in her career. The freshman went 4-0, going 2-0 in both doubles and singles play, to receive the honor on February 8, before collecting the award again on February 15, after posting a 2-0 record in singles play. The Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, native, tabbed the honor on March 1, after going 4-0 overall on the weekend in the Minutewomen's sweeps of both Seton Hall and Holy Cross.

Farima received the honor on March 15, after aiding the Minutewomen to a 4-1 victory at Bryant after posting a 2-0 record, earning a win in both singles and doubles at the No. 1 spot. In doubles her and Vitoria Okuyama defeated their Bryant opponents, 6-2, before she grabbed a point, winning 6-0, 6-4. The freshman is 8-1 in singles play, so far, this season, and 7-1 also in doubles competition, going 4-1 with partner Anna Napadiy, 2-0 with Cannon and 1-0 with Okuyama.
