Minutemen Come Up Short To River Hawks, 85-80

AMHERST, Mass. – Matt Cross scored 17 of his team-leading 19 points in the second half as UMass' second half comeback came up short against UMass Lowell in an 85-80 loss on Thursday evening in the Mullins Center. The Minutemen (7-2 Overall) rallied back from down 15 early in the second half to make it a one-point game with just under three minutes remaining.
UMass Lowell started the second half on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 45-30 as UMass went 0-for-6 to start the final 20 minutes of play. The Minutemen went on to make nine of their next 10 shots to make it a four-point game with 8:21 remaining. Cross put together a scoring stretch of 11 points in under three minutes of time early in the second half to help UMass claw its way back. The junior's scoring output marked a season-high as he finished 5-of-8 from the field and 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
UMass made it a one-point game once again with 2:00 left on a Keon Thompson jumper in the paint before UMass Lowell's Yuri Covington answered with a 3-pointer at the other end. The River Hawks shot over 52-percent from range on the night at 11-of-21 and finished the second half shooting at a 69-percent clip from the field and 56-percent for the game. Ayinde Hikim scored a game-high 23 points while Everette Hammond added 20 for the River Hawks.
The Minutemen fell behind early in the game, going a stretch of making one of eight shots early as the River Hawks mounted an 11-0 run to go up 17-4. UMass Lowell started the night 10-of-17 from the field and ended the first half at 45-percent shooting.
RJ Luis added 14 points off the bench for UMass on 5-of-8 shooting, including 12 in the second half as the Minutemen shot 50-percent over the final 20 minutes. Keon Thompson finished in double figures once again with 11 points while Dyondre Dominguez chipped in 10 points. T.J. Weeks Jr. grabbed a game-high nine boards to go along with eight points.
The Minutemen return to action on Sunday against Hofstra at 7 p.m. at the Barclays Center.
