AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team returns home to the Mullins Center for a Monday night matchup against UAlbany on the heels of a five-game winning streak. The Minutemen and Great Danes tip-off at 7 p.m.
Best Start Since 2013-14
UMass is riding a five-game winning streak heading into Monday night's matchup against UAlbany. The 6-1 record marks the best start to a season since the 2013-14 campaign in which the Minutemen opened the year with an 11-0 record. The five-game win streak away from home also marks the first of its kind since the 2013-14 season.
Bench Boost
The Minutemen rank 19th nationally and lead the Atlantic 10 in bench points per game with 33.0 per contest. RJ Luis leads the offensive attack off the bench with 8.9 points per game while Isaac Kante and Dyondre Dominguez add 7.9 and 7.7 points per game, respectively.
Last Time Out
UMass picked up a 71-68 win on the road at Harvard on Friday, rallying back from down 11 points in the second half to come away with its fifth consecutive win. Noah Fernandes scored a team-leading 18 points while T.J. Weeks Jr. added 13. Wildens Leveque added eight points and seven boards with Tafara Gapare chipping in a career-best eight points.
Not In Wildens' House
Wildens Leveque ranks 44th in the country in blocks per game at 1.86 and ranks third in the conference in the category. Leveque set a new Myrtle Beach Invitational single game record with five blocks in the win over Colorado.
Quality Not Quantity
UMass is shooting just over 39-percent from 3-point range to rank 27th nationally in the category. Conversely, the Minutemen attempt just 17.4 shots from range per game to rank 323rd in the nation. T.J. Weeks Jr. leads the way from deep at 50-percent (14-of-28) while Noah Fernandes, Matt Cross, and RJ Luis are each shooting at over 40-percent from beyond the arc.
Defensive Dominance
The Minutemen rank third in the A-10 and inside the top-100 nationally in scoring defensive having allowed just 65.0 points per contest. UMass is holding opponents to 27-percent from 3-point range to rank 29th in the nation and second in the conference.
Approaching 300
Head Coach Frank Martin is six wins away from reaching 300 for his career and currently holds a 294-202 record as a collegiate head coach. Martin picked up 171 of his 294 wins in 10 seasons at South Carolina and won 117 games in five seasons at Kansas State.
Looking Ahead
UMass remains at home following Monday's game for a Thursday night tip-off against UMass Lowell as part of the Kennedy Cup. The Minutemen then hit the road for a pair of Basketball Hall of Fame events, beginning with Hofstra at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Sunday, Dec. 11 before taking on North Texas on Saturday, Dec. 17 in Springfield.
