Minutemen Storm Back To Beat Crimson, 71-68

UMass trailed by as many as 11 in the second half before taking its first lead since the 11:48 mark of the first half with under three remaining.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team won its fifth straight game to mark the best start to a season since 2013-14 with a 71-68 win over Harvard on Friday night in the Lavietes Pavilion. The Minutemen (6-1 Overall) trailed by as many as 11 in the second half before storming back to take their first lead since the 11:48 mark of the first half with just 2:53 remaining.

T.J. Weeks Jr. gave the Minutemen a two-point advantage on a layup through contact with 2:53 left as part of his 13 points on the evening. Harvard came back to take a one-point lead on a pair of Chris Ledlum free throws with 1:13 remaining before a Tafara Gapare 3-pointer pushed the UMass lead back to two. Gapare finished with a season-high eight points and shot 2-of-3 from range.

Fellow freshman RJ Luis knocked down a pair of free throws with one second left to give UMass a three-point advantage after Gapare helped force a Crimson turnover at the other end with two seconds remaining up one.

Noah Fernandes finished with a team-high 18 points, with 15 coming in the second half, on 7-of-11 from the field. Fernandes knocked down four field goals for 11 points during a span of under three minutes as the Minutemen chipped away at an eight-point deficit. The guard also converted on two free throws to tie at 63-63 with 3:20 left before exiting the game.

Wildens Leveque finished with eight points and a team-high seven rebounds, including a drive and slam with 5:29 left to make it a two-point contest.

Dyondre Dominguez scored seven points on the night and score five straight off the bench early in the game before a 14-0 Harvard run saw the Crimson take a 24-13 lead with 7:08 left in the first.

The Minutemen return home to the Mullins Center on Monday night for a 7 p.m. matchup against UAlbany.
