AMHERST, Mass. -ย The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team is set to take on North Texas tomorrow in Springfield as part of the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. The Minutemen and Mean Green tip-off at 3 p.m. in the MassMutual Center.
Game No. 500
Saturday's game marks the 500th collegiate career game for head coach Frank Martin. The 16-year head coach holds a 296-203 career record, with 171 of his wins coming in 10 years at South Carolina while he won 117 games in five years at Kansas State.
Bench Boost
The Minutemen rank fourth nationally in bench points per game at 36.6 and lead the Atlantic 10 in the category. In their three games last week, the Minutemen posted 146 of their 238 points off the bench to average 48.7 per game for the week. Freshman RJ Luis leads the bench crew with 8.8 points per game while Dyondre Dominguez and Isaac Kante are adding 8.6 and 7.9 points per game, respectively.
Best Start Through 10 Sinceย '13-14
UMass is off to its best start through its first 10 games to start the season since a 2013-14 campaign that saw the Minutemen start 16-1 with the help of a 10-game winning streak. The Minutemen won six consecutive games this season from Nov. 17-Dec. 5 with the winning streak marking the longest since the 2014-15 season. UMass currently has the second-best winning percentage in the A-10 and is 38th-nationally in win rate.
Stepping Up
The Minutemen had three freshmen combine for 29.4 points per game over three games last week, led by Keon Thompson's 10.7 points per game with Tafara Gapare and RJ Luis chipping in 10.0 and 8.7 points per game, respectively. Thompson and Gapare both set new career-highs in scoring last week, with Thompson setting a new career-high with 13 points in the win over UAlbany while Gapare poured in a career-best 15 points. RJ Luis added 14 points against UMass Lowell.
HoF Invitational MVP
Matt Cross was named the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational for game four after posting 12 points and a tied for team-high nine rebounds in the 71-56 win over Hofstra at the Barclays Center. Cross scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half and scored six points during a scoring run that saw the Minutemen stretch their lead to 19 with just over five minutes remaining. This marked the second in-season honor for Cross, who was named to the Myrtle Beach Invitational All-Tournament team in November.
Still Dre
Dyondre Dominguez is in the midst of a breakout year, averaging a career-best 8.6 points per game off the bench to go along with 3.8 rebounds per contest. The junior is shooting a blistering 65-percent (4th in A-10) from the field to lead all qualifying Minutemen and has converted on 41-percent of shots from 3-point range and on 82-percent from the free throw line. Dominguez has tied his career-high in points with 15 twice this season and set a new career mark for most rebounds in a game with nine on Sunday against Hofstra.
Every Man Up
The Minutemen have 11 players averaging 10 minutes or more per contest while while six players are averaging 7.9 points or more per game.ย
Looking Ahead
Non-conference play concludes for the Minutemen on Tuesday, Dec. 20 in the Mullins Center against Dartmouth before Atlantic 10 play begins at St. Bonaventure on New Year's Eve. UMass plays its first home A-10 game of the season on Wednesday, Jan. 4 against Saint Louis.
