AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts Minutemen host CAA preseason favorite Towson tomorrow night in the Mullins Center for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The Minutemen and the Tigers both head into tomorrow's game with a 1-0 record.
The Opponent
Thursday's meeting between the Minutemen and Tigers marks the second all-time meeting between the two programs as UMass took the lone meeting in 2011. Towson returns four of its top scorers from last year's CAA regular season championship team and was tabbed the preseason favorites in their league.
The Opener
The Minutemen shot a blistering 72-percent from the field in the second half of a 94-67 win over Central Connecticut State on Monday in the regular season opener. Six players finished in double figures, led by 16 points from T.J. Weeks Jr. and 15 from Dyondre Dominguez.
Have A Day Dyondre
Dyondre Dominguez set new career-highs in multiple categories in the season opener against CCSU while tying his career-high in points with 15. Dominguez scored six straight points for UMass in a span just over two minutes and added another seven points in 90 seconds from the 10-minute mark to 8:30 remaining. The junior finished 7-of-10 from the field for a new career-best mark in field goals made while his seven boards tied his career-high.
Youth Movement
Two freshmen finished in double figures for the Minutemen on opening night led by RJ Luis' 14 points in his first collegiate start. Luis shot 5-of-11 from the field and added four assists, three rebounds, and three steals in his debut. Fellow freshman Keon Thompson chipped in 10 points in 19 minutes off the bench and pulled in five rebounds with three assists.
The Transfer Portal
UMass returned just five players from last year's roster and welcomed in seven transfers and two freshmen to the team for this year. Two players from South Carolina made the move with Coach Martin to UMass in Wildens Leveque and Brandon Martin. Massachusetts native Matt Cross returned to the Commonwealth after spending last year at Louisville while Gianni Thompson made the move from Boston College. Big man Isaac Kante transfered in from LIU with former top-50 recruit Rahsool Diggins from UConn.
They're Coming Home
Multiple Massachusetts natives returned to The Bay State to play for Frank Martin and the Commonwealth's Flagship University during the offseason. Wildens Leveque (Brockton) and Matt Cross (Beverly) both returned to their home state and joined fellow natives Noah Fernandes (Mattapoisett), Gianni Thompson (Newton), and Ryan Marcus (Wakefield).
Looking Ahead
The Minutemen begin a five-game road trip beginning with Colorado on next Thursday as part of three games at the Myrtle Beach Invitational. UMass plays true road games at USF and Harvard before returning home to the Mullins Center to take on UAlbany on Dec. 5 and UMass Lowell on Dec. 8.
