No. 2-Seeded Massachusetts Field Hockey Defeats No. 3-Seeded Lock Haven, 4-2, Advance to Atlantic 10 Championship Game

November 03, 2022 | Field Hockey

With this win, the Minutewomen have earned a spot in the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship game on Saturday, November 5.

AMHERST, Mass. - The No. 2-seeded Massachusetts field hockey team defeated the No. 3-seeded Lock Haven Bald Eagles on Thursday afternoon by a score of 4-2. The win ends Lock Haven's season at a 12-7 record (5-2 Atlantic 10), while the Minutewomen sit at 14-5 on the season, with a 6-1 record in the Atlantic 10.

The first half started off even, with no scoring chances coming until the second quarter. At 0:48, Lock Haven's Jazmin Palma scored off a penalty stroke to put the Bald Eagles on top first. The Minutewomen responded at 9:35, when senior Jess Beech netted a goal off a pass from freshman Paula Lorenzini off a penalty corner. Lorenzini notched her own goal just four minutes later, at 13:42, off another penalty corner, assisted by inserter Emilie Keij and stick stopper Steph Gottwals

With Massachusetts going into the second half on top, Gottwals increased the Minutewomen's lead by one when she snuck the ball inside the post past goalkeeper Kelsey Felix (2 saves), with the assist on the goal credited to Aisling Murray. Lock Haven's Palma scored another penalty stroke for the last Bald Eagle goal of the day at 9:38 in the third quarter, sneaking her shot past freshman goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen (6 saves). The final goal of the day was recorded by freshman Mia Smith, shot from the middle of the circle at 10:41 in the third quarter and was assisted by freshman Mali Herberhold.

Massachusetts led Lock Haven in penalty shots (13-12), but the Bald Eagles led the Minutewomen in both shots on goal (8-6) and penalty corners (11-6).

With the win, the Minutewomen have earned their spot in the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship match on Saturday, November 5 at 12 p.m. at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex, when Massachusetts will take on the No. 1-seeded Saint Joseph's. The Hawks bested the VCU Rams on Thursday morning by a score of 2-1 to move onto the Championship themselves.
