Freshman goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen recorded 8 saves and senior midfielder Jess Beech scored the lone goal for the Minutewomen in the loss.
AMHERST, Mass. - The No. 18 University of Massachusetts Field Hockey team lost a heartbreaker to No. 23 UAlbany on Sunday afternoon at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. The match brings both the Minutewomen and the Great Danes to an 11-4 overall record.
UAlbany's Luisa Knapp opened up scoring on the day just 5:50 into the game, with an assist by Julie Rodijk. However, Massachusetts' Jess Beech evened the score at 6:07 in the second quarter, swatting in a shot from Emilie Keij off a penalty corner.
The Minutewomen and Great Danes could not capitalize on any scoring opportunities for the rest of regulation, forcing two overtimes. 6:09 into the second overtime period, UAlbany's Blanca Orsola dribbled in front of the cage and got her shot past Massachusetts goaltender Myrte van Herwijnen (8 saves) to score the game-winner. UAlbany goalkeeper Hannah Bangan also recorded 8 saves on the day.
The Great Danes led the Minutewomen in penalty corners (9-6) and shots on goal (12-10), while the Minutewomen had the advantage in shots (15-13).
Massachusetts Field Hockey returns to action on Friday, October 21 as they take on the Richmond Spiders at 1 p.m. before returning home to take on the Lock Haven Bald Eagles on Friday, October 28 at 3 p.m. at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex for senior day.
