VCU Edges No. 21 Massachusetts, 1-0

October 01, 2021 | Field Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – A corner conversion from VCU's Janne Wetzel in the opening minute of the second quarter proved to be the difference as the Rams held off the No. 21 Massachusetts field hockey team (6-4, 1-1) on Friday afternoon at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex, 1-0.

The Minutewomen had a one-player advantage for the final 3:55 of regulation after Bridget McCormick was assessed a yellow card late in the fourth, and UMass utilized a kickingback in the final few minutes in search of the equalizer, but Rams goalkeeper Sasha Elliott and the VCU defense stood tall to keep UMass off the board, including a defensive stand in the final 30 seconds after Massachusetts was awarded a corner.

At the other end, Marlise van Tonder kept VCU at bay all afternoon, making two saves on the day. Massachusetts outshot the Rams 12-5 (7-4 shots on goal) on the afternoon and earned seven corner chances to the Rams' three.

VCU scored the game's lone goal on a shot by Wetzel assisted by Svea Sturm and Maite Sturm at 15:44 in the second quarter on a corner opportunity.

Massachusetts will finish off the weekend with a match at No. 10 Boston College on Sunday at 1 pm.
