September 17, 2021 | Field Hockey
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The No. 21 Massachusetts field hockey team (5-2, 1-0) received goals from three different scorers and Marlise van Tonder recorded her second shutout of the season to help the Minutewomen knock off Davidson, 4-0, in the Atlantic 10 opener on Friday night.
Van Tonder, who finished the night with two saves and entered the game 15th in the nation in goals against average, has held opponents to two goals or fewer in six of the seven games played this season.
UMass wasted no time to bolting out to an early lead when Izzy Acquaviva buried her second goal of the season, ripping a shot from the left side past Wildcat goalkeeper Cata Roell (nine saves saves) just 6:37 into the game
Bella Ianni extended the advantage to two with 2:55 left in the second quarter with her second goal of the season, taking a feed from Katherine Furry at the right side and firing a shot home to make it 2-0.
Mus Defauwes then gave Massachusetts a commanding three-goal lead just 1:11 into the second half with her second of the season before Ianni added her second of the game on a penalty stroke in the final seconds to close out the scoring.
UMass outshot Davidson 13-5 in the game and earned nine corner opportunities to the Wildcats' two.
The Minutewomen return to action on Sunday when UMass battles No. 15 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem beginning at 12 p.m. on ACC Network.
