American Edges No. 21 UMass In Double OT, 3-2

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --- Trailing 2-1 with less than seven minutes left in regulation, American knotted the game at two with 6:17 remaining in the fourth quarter before converting on a penalty corner in double overtime to nip the No. 21 Massachusetts field hockey team (4-2) on Sunday in College Park, Md., 3-2.
Claire Danahy and Dempsey Campbell scored in the opening moments of the first and second halves, respectively, while Marlise van Tonder made five saves in goal. Noor Coenen scored twice for the Eagles, including the game-winner with 6:39 left in double OT.
UMass wasted no time in taking an early lead as the Minutewomen converted on a penalty corner less than three minutes into the game when Claire Danahy knocked home a feed from Bella Ianni to give Massachusetts the 1-0 advantage.
The lead would be short-lived, though, as American leveled the game at one just three minutes later on a goal from Noor Coenen, her second of the season, when she ripped a shot into the top right corner.
Coming out of the break, UMass started the second half similar to how it started the first as Dempsey Campbell recorded her first goal of the season when she fired home her own rebound past American goalkeeper Bryn Underwood (five saves).
American wouldn't go away, though, and brought the game back to even once again with 6:17 to go when Julia Craft sent home a rebound off a corner for her first of the season to set the stage for Coenen in overtime.
Massachusetts continues its five-game road trip next weekend when the Minutewomen open up Atlantic 10 play at Davidson on Friday (6 p.m.) before a date with No. 14 Wake Forest on Sunday at noon.
