Hughes Tabbed Atlantic 10 Rookie Of The Week

The weekly honor marks the second consecutive for Alec Hughes as he was named the conference’s player of the week last week.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's soccer freshman Alec Hughes was tabbed the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after putting home a pair of goals in a 2-1 win on the road at Saint Joseph's on Saturday.

Hughes (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored both of his goals in the win over the Hawks in the opening 32 minutes, first connecting on a header in the 23rd-minute off a Ben Shepherd free kick that found the freshman at the far post for the goal. The forward followed up with his second under 10 minutes later, taking a turn in the box before sending a right-footed shot into goal on the keeper's short side.

Through his first eight collegiate games, Hughes has scored a team-leading six goals and two game-winning goals to go along with two assists for a total of 14 points. Of his 20 shots, Hughes has put 13 of those on target.

The Minutemen return to action on Saturday morning with an 11 a.m. matchup on the road at Fordham.
