Tre Mitchell Named To Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team

March 10, 2021 | Men's Basketball

Mitchell, a finance major, was also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team

AMHERST, Mass. – For the 23rd time in team history, Massachusetts men's basketball is represented on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team after sophomore center Tre Mitchell was named one of the top players in the league by the A-10's coaches on Wednesday.

Mitchell is the 23rd player to be named first team all-conference in program history, and first since 2013. He is also the sixth UMass underclassmen in team history to earn A-10 First Team accolades, joining Chaz Williams, Rashaun Freeman, Marcus Camby, Lou Roe, and Jim McCoy.

In addition, Mitchell was also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team on Wednesday. He holds a 3.574 cumulative grade point average and is slated to earn his bachelor's degree in finance in just three years.

Despite playing only 13 games this season, Mitchell left no doubt that he is one of the most elite players in the Atlantic 10. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native averaged 18.8 points per game (52nd in the NCAA; third in the conference) and 7.2 rebounds (ninth in the A-10).

Earlier this year, Mitchell was named a Top-Ten Candidate for the 2021 Karl Malone Award, given annually to the top power forward in the Division I men's college basketball.

Mitchell wasted no time in confirming that the hype is real on Dec. 11 vs. Northeastern with 31 points and 11 rebounds in his season debut, including 19 points and six boards in the first half alone. Mitchell's performance put him on a list with some of the UMass greats, tying him for the fourth most points in a season opener in program history behind only Roe, Camby and Julius Erving.

He did it again on Dec. 16 at La Salle where Mitchell had a career-high 37 points, tied for the eighth most points in UMass single-game history.

Mitchell saved some of his best for last at the Atlantic 10 Championship. He went for 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season in a blowout win over Saint Joseph's in the A-10 Second Round before going for 30 yet again in the season finale against Saint Louis in the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals.

Mitchell was tremendous for Massachusetts throughout the game against Saint Louis, keeping the Minutemen within striking distance for most of the night. He finished 10-of-16 from the floor, 2-of-3 from three and a perfect 8-of-8 from the line to record his fifth career 30-point game.

His five 30-point games are tied for the fifth most in program history in just 44 career games, and marked just the third time a Minuteman has scored 30 points in an A-10 Championship game (McCoy; 35 on Mar. 4, 1989 and Luwane Pipkins; 31 on Mar. 8, 2018).

He is one of 28 players in the nation, and two in the Atlantic 10, with at least three 30-point nights this season. In just 44 career games, Mitchell has reached double-figures 41 times.

Mitchell was joined on the First Team by A-10 Player of the Year Nah'Shon "Bones" Hyland (VCU), Kellan Grady (Davidson), Jalen Crutcher (Dayton), Kyle Lofton (St. Bonaventure) and Jordan Goodwin (Saint Louis).
