Women's Basketball Falls To Boston College, 66-60

December 08, 2021 | Women's Basketball

Breen and Philoxy eclipse 1,000 career points.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball team drops in state battle with Boston College, 66-60, on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. The highlight of the night came in the form of milestones. Sam Breen as well as Destiney Philoxy recorded their 1,000th points of their careers.

The pair are the 21st and 22nd Minutewomen to achieve the feat. The duo becomes the third in program history to reach it in the same season and the first since the 2006-2007 season. They are also the first known tandem to hit this mark in the same game in NCAA history.

UMass moves to 9-2 on the year. This is the 4th time in program history the team has begun a season 9-2 through the first 11 games.

Breen and Ber'Nyah Mayo led the way with 14 apiece. Breen and Angelique Ngalakulondi owned the glass with eight rebounds each, including five offensive rebounds for Ngalakulondi. Mayo came away with three steals while Philoxy erased three shots herself. The duo also had 2 assists each.

In the first quarter, UMass took an 8-6 lead by the 7:30 mark before BC brought it to an 8-8 draw. A three pointer from Sydney Taylor helped the Minutewomen regain the lead. The score was knotted up at 13 and again at 14 apiece. A layup by Mayo pushed Massachusetts to a 16-14 lead, but a triple from the Eagles put them up by one. BC continued to extend their lead to close out the quarter with a score of 23-18.

The second and third quarters was more of the same as BC maintained its lead throughout, bringing the tally to 33-29 at the half and 59-45 to close out the third.

The fourth quarter saw a surge from the Minutewomen, going on a 9-3 run lasting 5:57, pulling themselves within eight. After four made free throws by Philoxy and Breen, a Mayo jumper cut the deficit to six as the contest finished 66-60.

UMass heads to New York, N.Y.  on Saturday, December 11, to take on Columbia at 2pm. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
