Dow and Judd named captains for the 2022 season.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball head coach Matt Reynolds has announced that seniors Kevin Dow and Dylan Judd have been named captains for the 2022 season. The captains were selected by a vote of their teammates.

"I am very pleased with the team's selection of Dylan and Kevin as captains for the 2022 season," said Reynolds. "They both exemplify the character, work ethic and performance standards, on and off the field, that we would expect from our student-athletes.  I anticipate that they will do an outstanding job leading our group this season."

In the 2021 season, Dow started on the mound in three of his 11 appearances, and totaled the second most innings pitched for the Minutemen with 34.1, earning a 1-2 decision on the year. The Mansfield, Mass., native led UMass in strikeouts with 49, including a season-high of seven versus Holy Cross (3/31). Dow pitched a season best 6.0 innings and struck out six both at Rhode Island (4/23) and at Fordham (4/30).

"It's a great honor to know that our teammates collectively voted to give both Dylan and I the captain title," said Dow. "There are a lot of guys on this team that have contributed to trending the culture in the right direction and we have a really special group this year. Again, I'm grateful for this honor and am looking forward to what I fully expect to be a successful season ahead."

Judd earned the start in all 42 games, finishing the year with a .312 batting average, first on the team, a team-leading .493 slugging percentage and a .968 fielding percentage. He sat atop the leader board in hits (43), runs batted in (30), total bases (68) and in home runs with seven.

Throughout the year, Judd accumulated the most multi-hit games for the Minutemen with 13 total. The Oceanside, N.Y., native recorded a nine-game hitting streak, spanning from Apr. 14 to Apr. 24, and had the longest reached base streak on the team with 18, starting on Apr. 14. He also ranked second for UMass in multi-RBI games (eight), including a season best five in game two of a doubleheader at Towson (3/21). Also, at Towson, Judd went 3-for-3, notching a season-high two home runs, one double, one walk and season best four runs.

"It's truly an honor to be named captain this year, and I'm so thankful for this opportunity," said Judd. "Knowing that my teammates and coaches see me as a leader amongst the team is a really good feeling. We have an older team this year with a bunch of senior leaders, and I think we are primed to do something special. I'm really looking forward to getting the season started and seeing what we are made of this year."
