Breen's Double-Double Leads Women's Basketball To 74-61 Victory Over Fairfield

December 01, 2021 | Women's Basketball

Breen collected 12 points and 16 rebounds for her sixth double-double this season.

AMHERST, Mass. – Graduate student Sam Breen recorded her sixth double-double of the season, and 29th of her career, to aid the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team to a 74-61 win over Fairfield University on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.

UMass improves to 8-1 on the year, marking one of the best starting records through nine games for the Minutewomen since the 2002-03 season.

Breen led with a game-high 22 points, one point shy of her season best, while totaling a season-high 16 rebounds on the night, including 11 defensive rebounds. The Gibsonia, Pa., native, had a 57.1 three-point percentage, nailing four of her seven attempts. Destiney Philoxy put away 17 points, going five of-seven from the field, including 100.00 percent (4-of-4) from behind the arc. She also registered a team-high nine assists.

Sydney Taylor tallied four triples of her own to add 12 points to UMass' final total, while Ber'Nyah Mayo and Makennah White each had eight points apiece.

Massachusetts went eight-for-12 from the charity stripe (66.7 percent) and made 14-of-30 three-pointers, shooting 46.7 percent. The Minutewomen outrebounded the Stags 55-23 and logged 18 second chance points.

In the first quarter, UMass and Fairfield traded the first two points, before UMass picked up five more to push ahead 7-2 early on. The Stags came back within one point, but the Minutewomen went on an 11-0 run to pull ahead, 17-6. Two three-pointers for Fairfield brought the quarter to a 17-12 close.

With another one-point margin between the teams in the eighth minute of the game, UMass extended its lead by 10, making it a 28-18 contest. At the 3:38 mark, Massachusetts, again, took a 10-point lead, before adding five more points to end the first half leading by 15 with the score at 35-20.

The second half saw much of the same from the Minutewomen, as they ran away with their lead. The largest lead came at the 6:17 mark in the third quarter when UMass made it a 19-point game on a triple from Philoxy, bringing the score to 46-27. The fourth quarter saw the Stags bring the game within a seven-point difference, but Massachusetts held on to the lead for the remainder of the contest.

UMass welcomes in-state rival UMass Lowell on Sunday, December 5, for the second game of the Minutewomen's three-game home stretch. Tipoff is slated for 12 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
