Goals from Gottwals, Ianni, and Beech lead the Minutewomen over the Bald Eagles.
LOCK HAVEN, Pa.— No. 18 University of Massachusetts Field Hockey defeated Lock Haven by a score of 3-0 on Saturday courtesy of two second quarter tallies from Steph Gottwals and Bella Ianni, and a penalty stroke from Jess Beech in the fourth quarter. The win solidifies the Minutewomen's record at 13-5 (5-2 A-10) to end the regular season, and the Bald Eagles fall to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in Atlantic 10 play.
After a scoreless first quarter, the visiting Minutewomen struck first at Charlotte E. Smith Field, with Gottwals recording her third goal of the season on a deflection at the 19:07 mark.
With momentum on their side, Ianni found the back of the net off a Sophie Johnson assist. Ianni's fifth of the season gave Massachusetts a comfortable 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Neither goalkeeper was beaten in the third quarter of play, but Beech beat Lock Haven's Joaquina Orlandini on a penalty stroke at 57:46. Her fourth tally of the season was the dagger on Saturday, and Massachusetts rattled off their third consecutive win.
Goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder stood strong between the pipes for Massachusetts, stopping all four shots on goal from the Bald Eagles. The South African Olympian has recorded four shutouts in her last six games.
Versatility has been a strength for UMass since their first two wins in August, and the trend continued against Lock Haven. Three different Minutewomen scored goals on Saturday, with 15 different players doing so on the season.
On top of her goal in the fourth quarter, Ianni was a difference-maker off the bench with three shots on goal in just 23 minutes of play. 19 different Minutewomen saw action on the day.
Massachusetts will take on VCU on Friday, November 5 in Atlantic 10 Semifinal play in Merion Station, Pa.
