#18 UMass Field Hockey Falls To VCU In Atlantic 10 Semifinals

Minutewomen defeated by Rams, 2-1, in double overtime match.
MERION STATION, Pa. – No. 18 University of Massachusetts field hockey team fell to Virginia Commonwealth University in the Atlantic Semifinals at Ellen Ryan Field on Friday afternoon in a shootout.
Junior midfielder Emilie Keij opened the scoring for the Minutewomen on a rebound on a penalty corner in the fifth minute of the game. The goal was the De Pinte, Belgium, native's second of the season.
VCU brought the contest to a 1-1 draw in the 17th minute from a passing sequence off a corner. Litiana Field took a shot after receiving from Janne Wetzel.
The third and fourth quarters remained the same, forcing a double overtime for the third team in the two porgrams' meeting in the A-10 Championships. Both UMass and VCU had a couple of opportunities, but ultimately, the game was sent to a shootout.
After five rounds, the Minutewomen and Rams each notched two goals, before heading into the sixth round of the shootout. VCU's Svea Sturm shot first, sending it to the back of the cage for the deciding tally. Freshman midfielder Hannah de Gast was next, taking a shot that was pushed away by the Rams' goalkeeper Sasha Elliott.
Graduate student goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder made five saves in her 80 minutes of play, while Elliott tallied three saves for the Rams.
