Late Game Heroics Lift No. 21 UMass Past No. 10 BC In 2OT, 3-2
October 03, 2021 | Field Hockey
Jess Beech scored the game-tying goal with 34 seconds left in the fourth
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After falling behind 2-0 early in the second quarter at No. 10 Boston College, the No. 21 Massachusetts field hockey team responded with two goals in the final 15 minutes of regulation, including the game-tying strike from Jess Beech with 34 seconds left in the fourth quarter, before an eight-round shootout gave the Minutewomen (7-4) the come-from-behind victory on Sunday, 3-2.
The victory snaps a two-game losing skid to the Eagles dating back to 2018 and is also UMass' highest win over an NFHCA ranked opponent since Sept. 25, 2016 when the Minutewomen knocked off No. 9 Boston College in overtime, 3-2.
Marlise van Tonder was stellar in net yet again for the Minutewomen, making eight saves on the day including six of eight shootout bids from the Eagles.
Milagros Arteta put the hosts up 1-0 early when she scored her sixth of the year off a feed from Jill Joossens just 3:37 into the contest before Sky Caron extended the Boston College lead with her first of the season off a corner opportunity 1:29 into the second quarter.
The game stayed that way until 6:21 into the third quarter when Katie Samaranayake buried her first of the season off a corner chance assisted by Amalie Green to bring Massachusetts within one.
Beech then created some late-game heroics when she knocked home a rebound following a UMass corner in the final minute of regulation to force overtime.
After neither team could pot the game winner over two 10-minute OT periods, sending the game to a shootout, Katherine Furry tied it up a two apiece in the fourth round before Georgie McTear ripped home the eventual game-winner in the eighth round.
The Minutewomen will be back on the road on Friday when UMass resumes A-10 play at Saint Louis.
