#20 UMass Field Hockey Rallies To Defeat #18 UConn, 2-1 In 2OT

Goals from Defauwes and Beech carry the Minutewomen past the Huskies.
STORRS, Conn. – No. 20 University of Massachusetts Field Hockey used a late goal by Mus Defauwes to extend the match and Jess Beech scored the game winner in the second overtime period to lift the Minutewomen over No. 18 UConn, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The victory moves UMass to 12-5, while the Huskies fall to 9-9 on season.
The Huskies opened the scoring in the 8th minute with a goal of a penalty corner from Lindsay Dickinson, set up by Morgan Kaufmann and Jessica Dembrowksi.
Despite being out-shot 24-7 on the day (12-5 in shots on goal), the Minutewomen rallied for the equalizer at the 58:46 mark with Defauwes finishing off a feed from Georgie McTear.
Goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder then came up with a big stop in the closing seconds off a UConn penalty corner, sending the match to overtime.
McTear then set up the deciding tally in the 78th minute for her second assist of the day as Beech gave UMass the victory.
UConn led in corners on the day, 10-5 and van Tonder finished with 11 saves, while Huskies' keeper Cheyenne Sprecher had three stops.
UMass will close out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 30, at Lock Haven at 11 a.m.
