AMHERST, Mass. – No. 21 University of Massachusetts field hockey saw its four-game winning streak snapped as Richmond (5-10, 4-2 A-10) edged the Minutewomen (10-5, 4-2 A-10), 1-0 at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Richmond's Addie Nash scored the lone goal of the day on a backhand into the top corner of the UMass cage, 16:38 into the contest over the left shoulder of goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder (four saves).
The Minutewomen had an offensive push during the fourth quarter, resulting in five shots on goal (nine total shots) and three corners. Massachusetts' best chance came from two shots by Steph Gottwals, both of which were turned aside by Richmond goalkeeper Erika Latta.
Massachusetts outshot the Spiders 17-10 (10-5 shots on goal) and earned six corners over the Spiders' three.
The Minutewomen return to action on Friday, October 22 when the squad will take on the La Salle Explorers on Senior Day at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex, scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
