Gottwals' Overtime Goal Guides #21 UMass Over #11 Saint Joseph’s

Steph Gottwals scored her second overtime goal of the season to lead the Minutewomen to victory.
AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 21 Massachusetts field hockey team bested No. 11 Saint Joseph's for the first time in the regular season since 2015 with an overtime goal by Steph Gottwals to go along with 14 saves by Marlise van Tonder. The Minutewomen improved to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in conference action, while the Hawks fell to 10-4 (4-1 Atlantic 10).
After a scoreless regulation match, Steph Gottwals launched a goal past Robin Bleekemolen, her second goal of the season and second overtime goal. Gottwals put the ball in the cage just over nine minutes into overtime after UMass' Jess Beach attempted a shot that hit a Hawk and found the stick of Gottwals, who shot it into the back of the cage.
Van Tonder came up with 10 combined saves in the second half and overtime, including five in the overtime period to keep the Hawks scoreless.
The Hawks finished with a 22-8 shot advantage and held a 12-6 advantage on corners. Gottwals put both of her shot attempts on target while Georgie McTear and Jess Beach each attempted a pair.
Massachusetts looks to extend its four-game win streak on Sunday during their Atlantic 10 matchup against Richmond at 1 p.m. at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
