McTear scores twice as the Minutewomen win their third straight.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts field hockey used a trio of second half goals to propel the squad to its third straight victory as the Minutewomen defeated Yale, 3-0 at Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon. The win moves UMass to 9-4 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 4-7.
UMass fended off a series of penalty corners as the first quarter was winding down, including a pair of clutch saves from Marlise van Tonder, as the teams were scoreless through the opening half.
Then in the 38th minute, Hannah de Gast collected the ball in the middle of the circle and fed Josie Rossbach to her left for a shot through traffic that found the back of the Bulldogs' cage.
UMass doubled its lead in the 49th minute as Georgie McTear collected her own rebound after her initial shot off the penalty corner was blocked and drove the ball home with her back to the goal.
McTear struck again in the closing seconds of the contest, lofting a shot high into the top right corner of the cage from the top of the circle from de Gast and Amelie Green.
UMass finished with a 17-13 advantage in shots and led 13-9 in penalty corners. VanTonder made 7 saves on the day and Luanna Summer had five for the Bulldogs.
The Minutewomen will return to action next Friday, Oct. 15, continuing their four-game homestand with an Atlantic 10 match vs. Saint Joseph's at 3 p.m.
