FOOTBALL CAPTAINS ELECTED AT UMASS; SUTTON NAMED HOOP MVP

AMHERST----Paul Manganaro, a linebacker from Winchester, and Stan Kaczorowski, an offensive guard from Scotch Plains, NJ, have been elected co-captains of the 1986 University of Massachusetts football team.
Manganaro, a second team All-Yankee Conference choice last year at outside linebacker, had 43 unassisted tackles in 1985. In addition, the 5' 11, 220 pounder also had five quarterback sacks, recovered two fumbles and caused two others. He proved last year that he totally recovered from a knee injury that caused him to miss the entire 1984 season.
Kaczorowski was named second team All-ECAC (I-AA) and second team All-Yankee Conference-last year. A two year starter on the offensive line, the 6'2, 250 pound Kaczorowski also showed his value as a placekicker in 1985 when he converted five of six extra points and four of eight field goals.

AMHERST---Lorenzo Sutton, a 6'2 sophomore guard from Albany, GA, who was named an honorable mention All-American by The Sporting News, was chosen the Most Valuable Player of the University of Massachusetts basketball team for 1985-86.
Sutton, a second team All-Atl3ntic 10 choice, led UMass in scoring with a 17.8 average on .501 shooting from the field and .750 accuracy from the foul line. The recipient of the UMass Academic Award, Sutton also pulled down 4.1 rebounds per game.
David Brown, a 6' 4 1/2" forward from Baltimore, MD, was Coach Ron Gerlufsen's Most Improved Player. Named to the Atlantic 10's All-Rookie Team, Brown was second to Sutton in scoring with a 9.1 average and led UM in rebounding at 5.2.
Point guard Carl Smith, a 5'11 junior from Kings Mt., NC, was UM's top defensive player. Aside from setting a UMass career record for assists with 658, Smith led the Minutemen with 40 steals. He was also third in scoring at 7.1 per game and topped UM in foul shooting with a .781 percent.
Fitzhugh Tarry, a 6'8 freshman from Buffalo, NY, was selected UM's Unsung Player for the 9-19 Minutemen. Tarry played in 17 games, started one and averaged 1.7 ppg.
