March 09, 2020 | Men's Basketball

Mitchell is the first A-10 player since Lamar Odom (1998-99) to win five straight

AMHERST, Mass. – For the fifth straight week, and sixth time this season, Tre Mitchell is the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native averaged 29.0 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game in a pair of contests against La Salle and Rhode Island last week, shooting 59.4% from the floor (19-of-32), 69.2% from three (9-of-13) and 91.7% from the line (11-of-12).

Mitchell is the first player to win Rookie of the Week in five consecutive weeks since Rhode Island's Lamar Odom during the 1998-99 season and first Minuteman to win it six times in a season since Rashaun Freeman in 2003-04.

On Wednesday at La Salle, he recorded 24 points and nine rebounds on a 9-of-16 night from the field in a 75-64 win, helping the Minutemen secure a first round bye in the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time since 2016. Against the Explorers, he also broke the UMass freshman record for field goals made in a season, previously set by Jim McCoy (193) during the 1988-89 season.

Mitchell followed it up with a season-high 34 points on 10-of-16 shooting (6-of-8 from three) and 12 rebounds against Rhode Island to record his fifth double-double of the season and finish three points shy of tying the UMass rookie record for points in a game.

He enters the A-10 Tournament eight points away from breaking the UMass freshman record for single-season scoring, also held by McCoy in 1988-89 (555 points).

Mitchell and the Minutemen, the No. 8 seed in the conference championship, will take on VCU on Thursday at 12 p.m. on NBCSN.
