Tre Mitchell breaks UMass single-season freshman FG record with 24 points
PHILADELPHIA – Freshman Tre Mitchell had 24 points and nine rebounds and the UMass men's basketball team (14-16, 8-9) shot 47% from the floor as the Minutemen picked up its second road win in the last three outings with a 76-64 win on Wednesday at La Salle, securing a first round bye in next week's Atlantic 10 Championship in Brooklyn.
Mitchell shot 9-of-16 on the night, breaking the UMass freshman record for field goals made in a season, previously set by Jim McCoy (193) during the 1988-89 season, and recording his 10th 20+ point game of the season.
Sean East II had 18 points and eight assists in his first start since Jan. 25 vs. George Washington, while Preston Santos added 13 on 5-of-7 from the floor (3-of-4 from three) for a UMass squad that shot 36% from three on the night (10-of-28).
David Beatty had a team-high 20 points for La Salle, while Saul Phiri had 13 and eight rebounds for the Explorers, who shot 38% (21-of-56) overall.
The Minutemen found the three-ball early on in the first half as Mitchell and Preston Santos both connected on their first deep balls of the night for a UMass team that was in control of the game for a majority of the opening 20 minutes.
Keon Clergeot provided a spark off the bench, going 2-of-3 from the floor, including his second four-point play of the season, his team-leading 20th charge taken of the year and a career-high five rebounds in 14 minutes.
Holding a two-point lead with seven minutes to play until the break, Massachusetts rattled off an 8-0 run over 2:24 to take its largest lead of the night to that point at 21-19 before going into the locker room with a seven-point advantage, 31-24.
La Salle stayed within striking distance as the second half got underway, trimming the lead down to three 5:22 in regulation on a layup from Sherif Kenney.
The Minutemen battled foul trouble midway through the second half when Samba Diallo and Santos both picked up their fourth fouls of the night, but Mitchell kept the team up with 15 second half points while Santos drilled a corner three as the shot clock expired to put the visitors back up by double-digits with six minutes to play, 59-47, before burying a three to give UMass a nine-point cushion with under two minutes to play.
The Minutemen will close out the regular season on Saturday night when Massachusetts hosts rival Rhode Island at 7 p.m. on Senior Night at the Mullins Center. The game will be televised on NESNplus and ESPN+.
