Tre Mitchell Named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year

Mitchell is the sixth player in team history to win the award, and first since 2004
AMHERST, Mass. – After establishing himself as one of the premier freshmen in the nation, UMass men's basketball's Tre Mitchell has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Mitchell is the sixth player in team history, and first since 2004, to be named the league's top rookie joining Edwin Green (1981), Jim McCoy (1989), Marcus Camby (1994), Anthony Anderson (2002) and Rashaun Freeman (2004).
Mitchell was also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team, the first UMass freshman to be named to an Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team since Camby in 1994. as well as the All-Rookie Team, UMass' first selection to the rookie team since Chris Lowe in 2006.
The Pittsburgh, Pa. native has taken the Atlantic 10 by storm this season, being named the league's Rookie of the Week six times including five straight weeks to end the regular season. He's the first A-10 player to win five straight weekly accolades since Rhode Island's Lamar Odom in 1998-99, and first player in UMass team history to do so. His six weekly honors are the most for a Minuteman since Freeman in 2003-04.
Mitchell enters the Atlantic 10 Championship sixth in the conference with 17.1 points per game this season and second in scoring in league games (19.6 ppg) behind only A-10 Player of the Year Obi Toppin from Dayton.
Mitchell is 47th in the NCAA, and third among rookies, with 206 field goals. On Mar. 4, he broke the UMass freshman record for made field goals in a season, previously held by McCoy (193, 1988-89). Mitchell's 548 points, meanwhile, are fourth in the nation among NCAA freshmen, and eight away from breaking the UMass rookie record for points in a season, also held by McCoy (555, 1988-98).
Mitchell has gone up against some of the nation's top teams and most dynamic big men in the country throughout the season. He is averaging 19.3 points per game, 7.5 rebounds per game and is shooting 48% from the floor against NCAA NET top-100 opponents this season (16 games).
One of his biggest games of the year came in the season finale against Rhode Island when he went off for a season-high 34 points along with 12 rebounds, the third most points in a game for a UMass rookie in team history and most since McCoy had 35 on Mar. 4, 1989.
Joining Mitchell on the A-10 All-Conference Second Team were Kellan Grady (Davidson), Marcus Weathers (Duquesne), Blake Francis (Richmond), Grant Golden (Richmond), Hasahn French (Saint Louis), while First Team selections included Jalen Crutcher (Dayton), Obi Toppin (Dayton) Fatts Russell (Rhode Island), Jacob Gilyard (Richmond), Kyle Lofton (St. Bonaventure) and Jordan Goodwin (Saint Louis).
The Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team is comprised of Mitchell, Hyunjung Lee (Davidson), Jamison Battle (George Washington), Yuri Collins (Saint Louis) and Nah'Shon "Bones" Hyland (VCU).
Mitchell will lead the Minutemen into the Atlantic 10 Championship later this week when Massachusetts will take on VCU on Thursday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn at 12 p.m. on NBCSN. UMass is the No. 8 seed in the tournament, its highest since 2015, and earned a first round bye in the tournament for the first time since 2016.
