FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason had three double-figure scorers and used strong second and third quarters to build a double-digit advantage as Massachusetts fell to the Patriots, 73-56, on Wednesday night at EagleBank Arena.
Â
Junior Sam Breen led in the Massachusetts scoring column for the third consecutive game with 21 points and classmate Bre Hampton-Bey contributed 10 points of her own in the loss. Freshman Maeve Donnelly's nine rebounds were a game-high and sophomore Destiney Philoxy had three assists.
Â
Mason's Jacy Bolton and Nicole Cardaño-Hillary each put down 17 points and Bolton pulled down eight rebounds.
Â
Breen had eight points in a first quarter that went back and forth with neither side taking a lead of more than five, before the Patriots took a 17-16 advantage at the end of the period. A 12-3 Mason run in the second period ultimately helped the Patriots carry a 42-34 score into halftime before another 9-2 stretch after the break gave the home side a double-digit margin.
Â
UMass held the Patriots to just 2-of-14 (14.3%) shooting in the final frame, but the Maroon and White encountered a difficult stretch themselves and could not claw back in the waning minutes of the contest.
Â
Following the loss, UMass falls to 16-7 on the season, 6-4 in the Atlantic 10. Mason is now 8-15 overall and 2-8 in league play.
Â
