Tennis Suffers Setback Against St. John's

Minutewomen fall to the Red Storm, 5-2
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts tennis fell to visiting St. John's, 5-2 at the Bay Road Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon. The Minutewomen dropped to 3-7 overall with the loss while the Red Storm increased their record to 5-3 on the year.

Massachusetts won the doubles point through the efforts of Anna Napadiy and Martina Bocchi on the No. 1 court and Jovana Bogicevic and Jasmin Tripathy at No. 3.

Bogicevic and Tripathy made quick work of their St. John's foes, Gabriela Tenorio and Kajsa Stegrell, as the Minutewomen duo cruised to a 6-0 shutout. Minutes later, Napadiy and Bocchi sealed the doubles point when they finished off a 6-2 victory over Jessica Livianu and Milka Genkova.

Ashley Avery and Sarah Mezini also led their No. 2 doubles match over Oceane Garibal and Najah Dawson, 5-4, when it was halted after Napadiy and Bocchi secured the doubles point for UMass.

St. John's secured the match in singles play with wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4. Livianu provided the clincher on the No. 1 court with a 6-4, 6-2 outcome against Napadiy.

Despite the defeat, Massachusetts ended the day on a high note with strong play at No. 5 and No. 6 singles by Tripathy and Mezini, respectively.

Mezini took on Camila Ordonez at No. 6 and won the opening set, 6-2, but Ordonez responded and rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 win for the Red Storm. Tripathy fought through a back-and-forth match against Tenorio at No. 5 and collected the win 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.

The Minutewomen set out for Hanover, New Hampshire, next as the squad travels to Dartmouth College for two weekend matches. The Maroon and White will square off with the host-Big Green (4-4) on Fri., Feb. 21 at 6 p.m., before a Sat., Feb. 22 neutral-site meeting with Michigan State (6-3) at 1 p.m.
