Mitchell And Santos Lead Minutemen Past Duquesne, 73-64
January 25, 2020 | Men's Basketball
Santos logged his first career double-double in his first collegiate start
AMHERST, Mass. – Freshmen Tre Mitchell and Preston Santos stole the show for the UMass men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center, combining for 40 points as Massachusetts (8-12, 2-5) knocked off No. RV/RV Duquesne (15-4, 5-2), 73-64.
Mitchell scored 17 of his 25 points in the first half, and finished the day 8-of-15 from the field with eight rebounds, while Santos had a career day with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting along with 12 boards for his first career double-double in his first collegiate start. Samba Diallo set the tone on the glass with 13 for a UMass team that outrebounded the Dukes 52-34 and pulled down 18 offensive boards that led to 16 second chance points.
Leading by two at the half, the Minutemen shot 45% to preserve the lead throughout the duration of the final 20 minutes. UMass used a 9-3 run midway through the second half to build the lead up to seven and a 9-2 run with less than eight minutes to go to build a double-digit lead, with seven of those points coming from Santos.
UMass would get the lead up to as many as 14 with three minutes to play, and staved off a late Duquesne surge for its seventh win against the Dukes in the last nine meetings, and first win of the season against an NCAA NET top-100 opponent.
For the game, Massachusetts shot 21-of-60 from the floor and 27-of-35 from the line while holding the Dukes to a 22-of-60 showing. Sincere Carry led the Dukes with 20 points on 6-of-12 overall and 4-of-7 from deep, while Marcus Weathers also reached double figures with 13 points and nine boards.
After Carl Pierre was sent to the bench with two fouls in the first two minutes of the game, Mitchell put the Minutemen on his back in the first half with 17 of UMass' 25 points, along with seven boards.
Neither team led by more than four points in the opening 20 minutes, and the Minutemen went up for good when Keon Clergeot brought the fans to their feet by converting a four-point play with less than two minutes left in the half, the first for Massachusetts since Nov. 29, 2017.
The Minutemen will be back in action on Wednesday night when Massachusetts hosts Saint Joseph's at the Mullins Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be aired on NESN and ESPN+.
