Tre Mitchell has a career-high 28 points to lead the Minutemen
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Freshman Tre Mitchell had a career-high 28 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the floor, but St. Bonaventure (12-5, 4-0) received 19 points and six assists from Kyle Lofton and used a 19-5 run early in the second half to down the UMass basketball team (7-10, 1-3) on Wednesday night at Blue Cross Arena, 74-61.
Mitchell dominated down low throughout his 33 minutes of action, getting the Bonnies frontcourt of Osun Osunniyi and Amadi Ikpeze in foul trouble early and getting sent to the free throw line six times. Mitchell added six rebounds, three assists and two blocks on the night while Carl Pierre also reached double figures with 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting. Samba Diallo had a team-high eight rebounds and Sean East II added six assists for a Massachusetts team that was 20-of-53 (37%) overall and 7-of-22 from deep.
Lofton played all but 38 seconds to lead a Bonnies squad that shot 44% on the night (27-of-61) and turned the ball over just seven times. Dominick Welch had 11 points and a game-high 10 boards, while Jaren English and Bobby Planutis each had 12 points off the bench.
Massachusetts started hot from the floor, hitting six of their first 10 shots as Mitchell went to work down low to drop 16 first half points and get the Bonnies in foul trouble early. St. Bonaventure, which shot 48% (14-of-29) overall in the opening 20 minutes and pulled down eight offensive boards, led by as many as 15 in the half led by nine points and three assists from Lofton.
Free throws kept UMass in in midway through the half, with seven straight points from the line over a seven-minute span to stay within striking distance, and closed the half on an 8-2 run to claw within seven at the break with all eight points coming from Mitchell.
Mitchell continued his hot shooting out of the break, draining a three on UMass' second possession to bring it to within four points, but a 19-5 St. Bonaventure run over five minutes ballooned the Bonnies lead up to 19 with 10 minutes to play.
Massachusetts continued to battle, though, as Mitchell imposed his will down low with 12 second half points, including a three-point play with less than five minutes to go to bring him up to a game-high 28, as well as a pair of threes from Preston Santos and Dibaji Walker late.
The Minutemen will return to the floor on Saturday afternoon when UMass hosts George Washington at the Mullins Center. Tipoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. on NBCSN.
