George Washington Tops UMass Men's Basketball, 75-51

AMHERST, Mass. – The UMass men's basketball team (7-11, 1-4) brought a 22-point deficit early in the second half down to eight with 11:40 to go, but a 25-9 George Washington run down the stretch sealed it for the Colonials (8-10, 2-3) on Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center, 75-51.

Armel Potter (22 points) and Maceo Jack (20 points) set the tone for GW, which finished the game 25-of-49 overall from the floor and 18-of-19 at the foul line, including a 9-of-14 showing in the final 9:20 of the game. Tre Mitchell led four Minutemen in double figures with 13 points along with three assists, joined by Carl Pierre (11 points, five rebounds), Sean East II (10 points, four steals) and Dibaji Walker (10 points, five rebounds).

Massachusetts was 20-of-55 on the afternoon (36%) and 5-of-24 from three.

The Colonials shot 46% in the first half and used run of 13-4 midway through the half and a 14-3 in the final five minutes to open up a 16-point lead at recess. Jack was the story for GW, going 5-of-8 overall and 3-of-5 from deep to lead the way with 13, while Jameer Nelson Jr. and Jamison Battle had seven points apiece.

Pierre looked to keep the Minutemen in it, going 2-of-8 from three to lead the team with six points at the break for a Minuteman squad that was 8-of-27 from the floor in the opening half, while Diallo led the way on the glass with five boards to go along with five points.

After George Washington opened the second half with six straight points, the Minutemen went to work with an 15-3 run to bring the deficit down to 10 with 14 minutes to go, highlighted by back-to-back threes from Pierre and Mitchell.

Back-to-back buckets from Sean East II would cut it to eight, followed by a charge taken from Preston Santos at the other end, but GW responded with a 10-0 run of its own over the next 3:33 to get the lead back to double digits with 6:33 to go.

The Minutemen will head back on the road on Wednesday as the Minutemen travel to George Mason for a 7 p.m. tip on ESPN+.
