Leonard scores twice and Lindberg makes a career-high 41 saves as Minutemen snap Eagles’ 10-game winning streak.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – No. 10 University of Massachusetts hockey used clutch scoring from junior Jake Gaudet, a pair of tallies from junior John Leonard and a career night for goaltender Filip Lindberg to defeat No. 4 Boston College, 3-1 on Friday night at Conte Forum. The win moves the Minutemen to 14-6-1 overall, 7-3-1 in Hockey East, while the Eagles see their NCAA-best 10-game winning streak come to an end and are now 12-5-0 (6-3-0 HEA).
"I thought, first and foremost, that was a tremendous college hockey game," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "That was two teams playing really fast, heavy hockey up and down the ice—the fans got their money's worth tonight. That was a big statement game for us and we'll have to follow it up tomorrow night. They're a really good hockey team. Our guys just found a way to win and a big part of that was our goaltender, but very proud of our group tonight to come in here and play the way they did in the second period, but didn't break and I thought our response in the third was great although we got out-shot tonight and out-chanced, we won the one category that you want to and that's the score."
UMass opened the scoring 10:51 into the contest when Leonard broke up a pass at the Minutemen's blueline and was off to the races on a breakaway, tucking his team-leading 13th of the season in behind Spencer Knight for a 1-0 lead.
BC countered before the close of the period, however. At 18:13, Alex Newhook collected a feed from Aapeli Rasanen and Mike Hardman and slid the puck under Lindberg for the equalizer.
With the threat of overtime looming, Gaudet put the Minutemen back in front late in the third. Receiving the puck from sophomore Marc Del Gaizo on the perimeter, Gaudet stickhandled through the slot and netted his first of the season at 16:15.
Leonard added insurance for UMass in the final minute of play, taking the puck off the wall from freshman Reed Lebster and depositing into the empty net for his second of the contest.
BC out-shot the Minutemen 42-24 on the night and both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play. Lindberg totaled a career-high 41 stops between the pipes for UMass and Knight totaled 21 saves for the Eagles.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow night, Saturday, January 11, with a rematch at the Mullins Center, which will be televised on NESNplus at 7 p.m.
