Keon Clergeot scores career-high 25 points to lead Minutemen.
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Despite a game-high 25 points from Keon Clergeot, the UMass basketball team fell on Wednesday afternoon to George Washington 68-64 in overtime at the Barclays Center in the first round of the 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament. The Minutemen conclude the 2018-19 campaign with an 11-21 overall record.
Clergeot's career-best effort was highlighted by a 5-of-10 effort from beyond the three point line. He was joined in double-figures by Carl Pierre who notched 12 points to go with a career-high seven rebounds. Rashaan Holloway closed out his UMass career with a double-double posting 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Colonials (9-23) were led by 20 points from Terry Nolan, Jr., and 19 points by Maceo Jack. George Washington took advantage of 36 free throw opportunities where the Colonials converted 24 compared to a 10-of-22 effort from UMass.
UMass jumped out to a fast start to lead by as many as 14 points at the 12:28 mark of the first half. Clergeot scored eight points in the early goings as the Minutemen hit nine of their first 12 field goals including four from beyond the arc.
George Washington closed the gap with an 18-to-5 run heading into intermission to cut the Minutemen's lead to 30-29.
Coming out of the break, the second half was nip-and-tuck between the two teams with six lead changes and five ties. A lay-up by Tre Wood at the 2:03 mark put UMass up 56-54 before the Colonials were able to tie the game on the next possession. A missed jumper by Justin Mazzulla with 14 seconds to go gave UMass a look for the go-ahead points, but Clergeot's three-point attempt at the buzzer coming out of a timeout was just off target.
The overtime period saw Nolan hit a triple to start the scoring and George Washington went up by five on a pair of Mazzulla free throws with 3:19 to go. UMass pulled within one on a Pierre free throw with 11 seconds to go. The Minutemen were forced to foul and the Colonials hit three of four from the line to seal the win.
