No. 2 Massachusetts Hockey Falls 2-0 At No. 15 UMass Lowell

February 09, 2019 | Hockey

The Minutemen will be back in action next Friday, February 15, hosting Boston College in the Mullins Center .

LOWELL, Mass. – No. 2 University of Massachusetts hockey was unable to overcome an early deficit on the road, falling to No. 15 UMass Lowell on Saturday at the Tsongas Center. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 21-6-0 overall, 13-4-0 in league action, while the River Hawks improve to 17-8-2 and 11-4-2 in Hockey East.

"We tried to bill this game to our players as a playoff-style game for first place in the league, which it was, and we weren't ready to play," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "To not be prepared and to basically give them an early lead, it's tough to overcome. I give UMass Lowell a ton of credit, they're obviously the best team in our league right now. They play extremely well defensively and wait for their opportunities offensively. They're heavy, strong around the net and they were better than us in those areas tonight. We weren't ready to play a playoff style game. I felt, as the game wore on, we kind of played more accordingly and finally in the third period I think we got more shots than they did.  By that time they were comfortable with a 2-0 lead and just played strong defensive hockey."

UMass Lowell opened the scoring just 2:12 into the contest as Chris Shutz took the puck from Chase Blackmun and Reid Stefanson, curling out of the corner and wristing a shot past UMass netminder Matt Murray.

The River Hawks then extended their lead to 2-0 at the 14:46 mark with Anthony Baxter pocketing a tally from Connor Sodergren with the teams skating 4-on-4.

UMass surged in the third, out-shooting UMass Lowell 13-5 in the frame, but were unable to solve Chris Hernberg who finished the night with 31 saves for the River Hawks. Murray had 32 stops as UMass Lowell edged the Minutemen in shots, 34-31. Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play.

UMass will return to action next Friday, February 15, when the squad will open a home-and-home against Boston College at 7 p.m. in the Mullins Center.
