Men’s Hoops Drops Home Contest To Dayton, 72-48

Jonathan Laurent scored a game-high 21 points for UMass to go along with five rebounds.
AMHERST, Mass. – Jonathan Laurent scored a game-high 21 points for UMass as the Minutemen fell to Dayton 72-48 on Tuesday evening in the Mullins Center. The Minutemen (10-18 Overall, 3-12 Atlantic 10) head back out on the road for a Saturday matchup at Duquesne before returning home for the home finale on March 6 against Richmond.
Laurent's game-high came on an 8-of-13 night from the field as the junior scored 20 or more points for the second consecutive game after dropping in a career-high 24 points against Saint Joseph's on Saturday. Laurent added five rebounds and two steals.
Tre Wood finished with eight points for the Minutemen, including four early as UMass connected on four of its first five attempts in the first half to take an 8-2 lead.
Dayton (19-9 Overall, 11-4 Atlantic 10) took control of the contest with a quick 10-0 run to go ahead 12-8 before Laurent ended the run with a layup on the other end. The Flyers shot 14-of-17 from the field in the first half in addition to connecting on 10-of-14 attempts from the line in the opening 20 minutes to take a 40-18 lead into the locker room for half. Obi Toppin led Dayton with 19 points and eight rebounds while Josh Cunningham added 18 points.
UMass opened up the second half by connecting on their first field goals, including back-to-back 3-pointers from Laurent and Carl Pierre. Defensively, the Minutemen held Dayton to 40-percent from the field in the final 20 minutes of play while shooting 39-percent on the offensive end.
