Makar and Hildenbrand score for the Minutemen in the setback to the Friars.
AMHERST, Mass. – No. 2 University of Massachusetts led 1-0 after the opening period courtesy of Cale Makar's 11th goal of the season, but a late third period tally lifted No. 10/11 Providence past the Minutemen, 3-2 on Saturday at Schneider Arena. The setback leaves UMass at 24-7-0 overall, 16-5-0 in Hockey East play, while the Friars improve to 19-9-5 and 12-7-2 in league action

"We came into tonight knowing it was going to be a playoff-style game, heavy game," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I thought our guys played great. The first period I thought we were playing extremely well until we took the five-minute penalty and then killed the penalty off really well, but obviously losing Mario (Ferraro) is a loss for our team. In the second period I thought we lost the game for a stretch and I really liked our third period as well. We had a lot of scoring chances. In these tight games every puck, every battle counts and Providence found a way to win the game. We won here 3-2 earlier in the year and I wasn't really happy with the way we played. We lost 3-2 tonight and I'm really happy with the way we played. Providence is playing well, a desperate team, and I thought my guys showed themselves extremely well tonight."
Â
With the teams skating 4-on-4, Makar stripped a Providence defenseman of the puck at the Minutemen blue line and skated in alone on Hayden Hawkey for the breakaway tally 11:04 into the first.
Â
The Friars leveled things at 1-1, 6:10 into the second period when a slapper by Jason O'Neill from the point found its way into the top corner of the UMass net. Greg Printz and Ryan Tait collected the assists.
Â
Providence then took a 2-1 lead when Josh Wilkins cleaned up a loose puck in front of Minutemen netminder Matt Murray from Davis Bunz and Ben Mirageas at the 8:31 mark.
Â
UMass pulled even with the Friars 14:07 into the second. Senior Kurt Keats sent a pass to Colin Felix at the point for a shot that was stopped by Hawkey, but junior Niko Hildenbrand was there in the slot to clean up the rebound.
Â
However, with less than three minutes to play in regulation, Scott Conway tucked the would-be game winner under Murray from Tyce Thompson and Brandon Duhaime at 17:04.
Â
The Minutemen out-shot the Friars, 36-30 and went 0-for-4 on the power play, while Providence was 0-for-5, which included a five-minute man advantage midway through the first period.
Â
Murray totaled 27 saves for UMass and Hawkey finished with 34 stops for the Friars.
Â
The Minutemen will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 28, when the squad will head to North Andover, Massachusetts to face Merrimack in a 7 p.m. contest.
