CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The UMass basketball team (5-5) had three players reach double figures, including a team-high 13 points from freshman Tre Mitchell, but Harvard (6-4) shot nearly 60% from the floor and received 19 points apiece from Noah Kirkwood and Robert Baker to knock off the Minutemen on Saturday afternoon at Lavietes Pavilion, 89-55.
Carl Pierre and Sy Chatman also posted double-digit afternoons with 10 points each, while T.J. Weeks added eight points off the bench. Chatman also added a team-high five boards along with Djery Baptiste. The Minutemen shot 32.8% (19-of-58) overall and 3-of-19 from three, while Harvard had 46 points in the paint and outrebounded Massachusetts, 40-27.
The Minutemen struggled from the floor in the first half, shooting 29% (9-of-31), including 1-of-10 from three. Pierre led the way in the opening 20 minutes with eight points on 2-of-9, while Harvard used a 13-3 run midway through the half to increase its lead to 17 at the break. Baker and Kirkwood set the tone for the Crimson with 12 points apiece, with Harvard using 26-14 advantage on the glass.
Chatman and Mitchell went to work early in the second half, leading UMass on a 9-2 run out of the break in an effort to cut the deficit. But the Crimson used runs of 7-0 and 10-0 as the half continued to maintain control of the game, with Danilo Djuricic scoring seven in the final 20 minutes.
The Minutemen will return home to host Yale on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on NESN.
