Women’s Hoops Takes Down BU, 58-45

Minutewomen off to best start through 10 games since 2006-07 season

BOSTON – Led by 25 points from senior Hailey Leidel, University of Massachusetts women's basketball defeated Boston University, 58-45, early Wednesday afternoon at BU's Case Gymnasium. It is the fourth straight win for UMass (7-3), who have also taken seven of their last eight games and are off to their best start through 10 games since the 2006-07 squad opened up 8-2.

Four different Minutewomen in Leidel, sophomore Destiney Philoxy and freshmen Maeve Donnelly and Angelique Ngalakulondi each pulled down six rebounds. Senior Vashnie Perry (10 points) dished out a game-high four assists, while Donnelly's three blocks and Philoxy's three steals were game-highs as well.

With her performance, Leidel moved up to No. 4 on the program's all-time career scoring list (1,527), passing former Minutewoman Kate Mills (2004-08). Leidel entered the day needing 23 points to tie Mills and surpassed Mills with a late pair of free throws. Melissa Gurile (1992-96) is third on the list with 1,679 points in her career.

A back-and-forth first half saw five lead changes and neither side build an advantage of more than six. Leidel immediately sparked Massachusetts with a 10-point first quarter but the Terriers remained neck-and-neck in part thanks to success on the offensive glass with nine rebounds at that end in the opening 20 minutes.

UMass reclaimed the lead at 24-23 on a Donnelly layup with 5:44 remaining in the half and never trailed from that point. A 10-1 run to close the third quarter gave the Maroon and White some breathing room before the sides traded buckets in the final stanza en route to the final buzzer.

On the afternoon, UMass shot an even 34% (18-of-53) from the field and held BU under 30% (26.5%, 13-of-49).

For BU, Nia Irving turned in a double-double on 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Massachusetts has one contest remaining before final exams; a Sun., Dec. 15 contest vs. Siena with tip slated for 2 p.m. at the Mullins Center. Single game and season tickets, along with a variety of group ticket offerings, are on sale and can be purchased by visiting UMass Athletics Ticket Central or by calling (866) UMASS-TIX.
