Davis records first career goal in regular season finale

STORRS, Conn. – University of Massachusetts field hockey was defeated at No. 3 nationally-ranked UConn, 5-1, on Sunday at the Huskies' George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. The game wraps up the regular season for UMass, who enter next week's Atlantic 10 Championship at 10-9 overall and UConn heads into the BIG EAST Tournament with a 16-3 record.

The Huskies took an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter by way of two penalty strokes. Svea Boker put the home side on the board in the fifth minute and Claire Jandewerth doubled the lead in the 11th minute.

Junior Lucy Cooper gave the Minutewomen their best chance of the opening frame, coming into the circle and putting two shots on cage, but Cooper was denied on each attempt by UConn goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher (two saves).

UConn added two more tallies in the second quarter from Maddy Wray (19th minute) and Marie Auer (26th minute).

Senior Sara Davis put the Minutewomen on the board just after halftime in the 35th minute. Off a scramble in front the ball came back to Davis at the top of the circle, where her shot deflected off a UConn stick and over Sprecher. Freshman Steph Gottwals earned an assist on the play.
The Huskies wrapped up the scoring for the day in the 58th minute on Jandewerth's second of the game, a penalty corner drag flick.

Junior goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder made the start for the Minutewomen and made two saves in the first half before being relieved by redshirt sophomore Megan Davies (three saves). For UConn, goalkeeper Abby Lucas closed out the final 5:11 of regulation.

The 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship begins on Fri., Nov. 8 with the Semifinal Round at the University of Richmond's Crenshaw Field. The full bracket will be announced by the A-10 shortly.
