Field Hockey Falls to Richmond in Atlantic 10 Semifinals

Minutewomen defeated by host Spiders in 3-1 match
RICHMOND, Va. – No. 2 seed University of Massachusetts field hockey fell to third-seeded Richmond, 3-1, in the Atlantic 10 Semifinals on Friday at Crenshaw Field. The Minutewomen exit the tournament with a 10-10 overall record.
Freshman Jess Beech tallied the lone goal for the Maroon and White, putting the squad on the board in the 47th minute. Beech caused a Richmond turnover in the attacking circle, then turned toward the top of the circle and went reverse-stick into the top left corner of the cage. It was her sixth goal of the season.
Elise Zwicklbauer powered the Spiders' victory with a five-point performance on two goals and an assist. Zwicklbauer rocketed her first goal home in the 15th minute, inserted a direct corner to Steffie Bongers in the 23rd minute and was camped on the left post for a deflection with 1:04 remaining in the second quarter.
The Minutewomen briefly lifted junior goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder in the 54th minute for an extra field player, but needing two goals the squad was unable to equalize as the match hit the home stretch. Van Tonder had six saves and Richmond goalkeeper Frankie Conklin made two stops in the win.
Richmond had a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners and out-shot the Minutewomen, 9-3.
The Spiders (11-9) advance to Saturday's Championship Game vs. top seed and No. 13 nationally-ranked Saint Joseph's. That matchup begins at 1 p.m.
