St. John’s Pulls Away From UMass At Mohegan, 78-63

November 24, 2019 | Men's Basketball

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Freshman Tre Mitchell recorded his first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds to pace a UMass basketball team (5-2) that led by a point at halftime before St. John's (5-2) used a 13-0 run midway through the second half to overtake the Minutemen and hold on for a 78-63 victory on Sunday afternoon at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Mitchell, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, was one of three Minutemen in double figures, joining T.J. Weeks who had a game-high 19 off the bench on 5-of-15 shooting (2-of-8 from three) and Keon Clergeot (11 points).

UMass, which shot 19-of-58 from the floor (32.8%) after starting the game shooting 48% in the first half, saw the Red Storm put three players in double figures, led by David Caraher's 17 points. Josh Roberts (16 points) and Julian Champagne (12 points) also had good night for St. John's, which outscored Massachusetts 42-14 in the paint and shot 44% (28-of-63).

UMass found itself in foul trouble early on in the first half, but the Minutemen grinded through it to take a 38-37 lead into the break thanks to 17 points off the bench from Weeks.

Neither team led by more than eight during the half, with St. John's jumping out to a 17-10 lead with a 10-0 run after Carl Pierre was sent to the bench with two fouls.

The UMass freshmen went to work from there though, combining for 30 of the team's 38 first half points on the shoulders of Weeks, Mitchell (seven points) and Preston Santos (four points). Santos did the job off the glass, as well, pulling down three offensive boards to help UMass to 11 seconds chance points in the opening 20 minutes.

After scoring 13 of the last 19 points of the first half, UMass kept it up early in the second half, starting off on a 7-0 run to take its largest lead of the night at 45-37 but the St. John's shots started to fall, with 12 of Caraher's 17 points coming in the final 20 minutes including a three in transition that gave the Red Storm the lead for good with 8:19 to play.

The Minutemen would cut it to three with less than five minutes to play, but SJU went 9-of-10 from the line down the stretch to pull away.

The Minutemen will hit the road on Thanksgiving weekend for a Black Friday matinee at Rutgers (2 p.m.) before returning to the Mullins Center on Dec. 4 to host South Carolina on CBSSN.
