Field Hockey Clinches A-10 Tournament Berth in Shootout Win Over VCU

November 01, 2019 | Field Hockey

Massachusetts takes absolute barn-burner, 1-0, after 10-round shootout

AMHERST, Mass. – In one of the most epic, edge-of-your-seat games in program history, University of Massachusetts field hockey clinched a spot in next week's Atlantic 10 Championship with a 1-0 win over VCU following a 10-round shootout on Friday afternoon at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex. A near-capacity crowd witnessed the absolute barn-burner of a matchup in a playoff-style atmosphere that saw the Maroon and White reach the league tournament for the 13th consecutive season.

On Senior Day no less, it was Sophie de Jonge who vaulted the Minutewomen into celebration with the decisive goal, coming into the circle toward the right post before changing direction and going reverse-stick past VCU goalkeeper Sasha Elliott. Junior Georgie McTear had a chance at heroics in the second round, being awarded a penalty stroke after de Jonge's shootout attempt was covered up by Elliott. But the stroke that followed was off-target and the shootout continued.

Junior goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder made three saves in 80 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods and carried a world-class effort into the shootout with UMass' season on the line. In the end, van Tonder came away with her fifth clean sheet of the campaign.

Both sides had opportunities to end the game in the first overtime, as VCU earned a penalty corner and both McTear and freshman Jess Beech put shots on goal that Elliott turned aside at the other end. In a game highlighted throughout by strong midfield play and circle entries that came at a premium, each side had just two shots apiece through the first three quarters and none in the second stanza.

The Minutewomen had three penalty corners on the day to two for VCU and UMass outshot the Rams, 7-5 in the contest. Elliott too was fantastic with five saves in the tough loss.

Following Friday's game, UMass is 10-8 overall and wraps up the league slate at 6-2 after winning its final five Atlantic 10 games. VCU is 8-8 and an even 4-4 in A-10 competition.

Massachusetts closes the regular season on Sun., Nov. 3 with a 1 p.m. game at No. 3 nationally-ranked UConn and will learn its official seeding for the Atlantic 10 Championship on Sunday night.
