Men’s Hoops Drops Physical Road Battle At VCU, 68-50

January 19, 2019 | Men's Basketball

Luwane Pipkins led the way with 14 points while Curtis Cobb chipped in 10 off the bench.

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team dropped a physical road battle to VCU on Tuesday night at the Stuart C. Siegel Center, 68-50. The Minutemen (7-11 Overall, 0-5 Atlantic 10) were led by Luwane Pipkins in scoring with 14 points to go along with eight boards while Curtis Cobb pitched in 10 points off the bench for a squad that got 24 points out of the reserves.

VCU (13-5 Overall, 4-1 Atlantic 10) jumped out to a 7-0 advantage after the Minutemen starting the game 0-of-7 from the field in the early moments. UMass answered back by connecting on four straight shots from the field, beginning with a Cobb triple followed by connections from range by Pipkins and Carl Pierre to tie it up at 9-9. Another Cobb jumper gave the Minutemen an 11-9 lead as both teams were forced into committing 12 combined turnovers in the first eight minutes of play and 23 in the first half.

The Minutemen remained close despite following with over four minutes of play without a point, pulling down 10 offensive rebounds leading to six points in the first 20 minutes to remain within striking distance. UMass shot just 30-percent in the first half while VCU attempted 20 shots from the line as the Minutemen had five players with at least two fouls as the Rams headed to the locker room with a 32-28 advantage. Unique McLean provided a spark off the bench with six points and four rebounds in the first half.

Pipkins connected from range to open up the second half and pull UMass within a point before a 7-0 VCU scoring run gave the Rams a 39-31 lead. Djery Baptiste ended the scoring run with an and-one off an offensive rebound just over three minutes into the half.

UMass pulled back within four points after a pair of consecutive buckets from Keon Clergeot and Pierre prior to VCU connecting on one of their three second half 3-pointers, the closest UMass came to tying things up for the remainder of the ball game. VCU strung together its then-largest lead nine minutes to play at 11 points as the Minutemen shot just 5-of-17 up to that point in the second half, finishing the half shooting 29-percent from the field and in the game.

VCU was held to 45-percent shooting on the night but connected on 75-percent (24-of-32) of its attempts from the free throw line led by De'Riante Jenkins' game-high 17 points.

The Minutemen return home for a pair of contests in the Mullins Center next week, hosting St. Bonaventure on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on NESN before playing host to Rhode Island on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.
